Sodium carbonate, discovered by French chemsit, Nicholas LeBlanc in 1791 is used frequently in the manufacturing of importnat products. Sodium carbonate helps to produce products such as soaps, soap powders and cleansing agents. Written as Na2CO3, Sodium carbonate is a grayish white, crystalline, odorless powder that is noncombustible. Scince this compound is noncombustible, Sodium carbonate does not affect nature but if ingested it will cause toxicity in your body. When doing the experiment of Sodium hydroxide and Calcium carbonate to produce Sodium carbonate, knowing these importnat facts helps. To produce the compund of Sodium carbonate, six pellets of Sodium hydroxide was added to water, to make aqeous. One scoop of Calcium carbonate was then added to the solution to from an aqueous, cloudy solution of Sodium carbonate. Since the product turned cloudy, the reaction took place and prouduced the compound, making the balanced equation: 2NaOH +CaCO3 -------> Na2CO3 +Ca(OH)2.
